São Paulo, August 2018 – This Friday, August 24, from 7 am to 4 pm, Eurofarma and the Horas da Vida Institute promoted the “Voluntariado Eurofarma (Eurofarma Volunteering) – Ampliando Horizontes (Expanding Horizons)– 2nd Edition / 2018” at CEMEB Floriza Nunes de Camargo, in Itapevi, a municipality in the Greater São Paulo region, in Brazil. The action aims to provide eye care for children and adolescents aged 4-14 years, in the Itapevi region.

Last year, the team examined 5,408 children, 2,251 of whom presented visual impairment and were given free eyeglasses. The focus of the action is to contribute to the health and quality of life of the low-income population and to encourage the volunteering culture among employees.

For the correct examination of each patient, the exams are performed individually by a specialist. “Last year, we examined 5,000 children and adolescents, and this year, we hope to help many others, so that the literacy process of these people does not present difficulties due to vision conditions,” said Maria del Pilar Muñoz, Vice President of Sustainability and New Business at Eurofarma.

During the workforce meeting, participants received eye care, a photo booth, and recreation and entertainment activities. For the action, 70 Eurofarma volunteers were made available, who were released from their activities to participate in the action.

The Project

Until October this year, the Horas da Vida Institute – which operates in the access and promotion of healthcare for the more vulnerable population – will be responsible for the training of volunteer professionals and screening of students in 12 municipal schools in Itapevi. So far, 5,000 screenings have been carried out, with 8,000 screenings estimated to be carried out by the end of the project. The purpose of the action is to promote a reduction in the number of children and adolescents who have low school performance due to vision deficit.

The project is linked to the work promoted by the Horas da Vida Institute, in which volunteer doctors provide free services to patients linked to registered NGOs that are awaiting consultations in the public health network. The institute is an organization that inspires and structures a network of humanized volunteers with the aim of optimizing the use of the health system and reducing its gaps.
