The World Health Organization (UN) has chosen June 26th as the “International Day Against Drug Abuse.” According to its World Drug Report, around 5% of the world's population population with ages ranging from 15 to 64 years use illicit drugs, which corresponds to 243 million people. Of this total, 27 million consume drugs regularly or present disorders or addiction.

In addition to causing immediate effects, drug abuse can cause permanent changes in the body of its users, such as destruction of neurons, development of psychiatric illnesses, liver damage, development of contagious diseases and heart diseases.

Abusive use of these substances can also lead the user to an early death due to the overdose. Therefore, it is extremely important that drug users receive treatments at specialized recovery clinics for addicts. Drugs effects also harm the families of drug abusers’ due to their uncontrolled behaviors and isolation from family and society.
