Just like in the summer, winter also requires certain care. The sudden drop in temperature allows the emergence of typical diseases, such as colds, flu, rhinitis and sinusitis. Because they have a lower immunity and a lower ability to regulate body temperature, the elderly are more sensitive to this time of year. Joint discomfort and muscle pain are frequent, as are respiratory infections such as pneumonia1.

Characterized by infection in the lungs, pneumonia is one of the leading causes of elderly hospitalization2. Its symptoms are often confused with those of the flu and for this reason, many people do not take the necessary steps for their cure. When it is not treated quickly and correctly, it poses various health risks and can even lead to death3. Check out what its symptoms are and understand the main differences between the flu and pneumonia4:

Pay attention to the Signs

  • COUGH;
  • CATARRH;
  • FEVER - IF NOT TREATED AFTER 4 DAYS, THE RISK OF PROGRESSING TO PNEUMONIA INCREASES.

Pneumonia

  • MENTAL CONFUSION;
  • SHORTNESS OF BREATH;
  • COUGH;
  • CATARRH;
  • PAIN IN THE CHEST WHEN BREATHING;
  • FEVER – LASTS MORE THAN 4 DAYS.

It is important to emphasize that if the elderly present symptoms of mental confusion, chills or breathing difficulties, it is extremely important to seek a doctor5.

 Some medical recommendations can prevent these diseases and offer the tranquility our elders need:

  • Take the flu and pneumonia shots;
  • Always be properly wrapped and warm;
  • Maintain a healthy and balanced diet;
  • Drink a lot of water;
  • Practice indoor stretching exercises;
  • Take hot and relaxing baths;
  • Avoid crowded places and keep environments always ventilated.
