São Paulo, November 22, 2018 – Eurofarma, a pharmaceutical multinational with 100% Brazilian capital, is the winner in the pharmaceutical category of the Guia Exame de Sustentabilidade (“Exame Sustainability Guide”), a brazilian award that recognizes the actions of companies in the field of sustainability. With this year’s achievement, the company became the only one in the industry to be the three-time award winner of the publication, which is a benchmark in Brazil.

The development of an unprecedented method for decontamination of primary drug packaging in the domestic environment was the initiative highlighted by the award. By using products that can be easily found at the home, such as hydrogen peroxide and bleach, consumers can make homemade solutions to decontaminate primary packaging and contribute to the preservation of the environment. After the process, the primary packages that had direct contact with the drug become inert, minimizing the impact to the environment and being able to be referred for waste sorting. The measure will allow the reuse of noble materials such as aluminum, PVC, and PVDC, which were previously unused.

Eurofarma Synapsis, a startup acceleration program conducted in partnership with Endeavor, was also mentioned by selecting, in its first edition, 12 companies from economic sectors, including sustainability solutions focusing on alternatives for waste management, energy efficiency, water and emissions. The companies were guided by mentoring and network access.

In the 19th edition of the "Guia Exame de Sustentabilidade", 189 companies were evaluated, after answering the questionnaires made by the publication in partnership with the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation of São Paulo. The questions were cleared by the journalistic team and evaluated by a deliberative board of experts, who finally acknowledged the 65 best companies in 16 sectors.

“The pharmaceutical industry is, by its very nature, highly connected to technological advances. We are daily moving towards innovation, and this is a subject that is not only present in our research, but also in all other areas of the company. We always look for the future in order to anticipate trends, so permanently seeking new technologies is paramount. This acknowledgment is a source of great pride,” said Maurizio Billi, President of Eurofarma.

Maria del Pilar Muñoz, Vice President of Sustainability and New Business at Eurofarma and responsible for the project of decontamination of primary drug packaging, reinforces the importance of raising society’s awareness of creating a more sustainable universe. “We are continually looking for innovative and more sustainable solutions. This challenge takes place on a daily basis and permeates every area of the organization. As the agents of change that we wish to be, we will engage more and more clients, physicians and patients, as well as moving forward with research for other products.”
