São Paulo, November 2020 – Lactare, Eurofarma’s human milk bank, set a new record for human milk collection in October: 143 liters! This is the largest volume collected since its creation in August 2019. The pharmaceutical company was the first laboratory to set up a private human milk bank in Brazil, and its main purpose is to highlight the importance of breastfeeding for child development.

At its inception, Lactare set a target of 60 liters of human milk per month, donated to premature babies hospitalized in the Neonatal ICU at the Itapevi General Hospital. The milestone was reached in April this year, despite the adverse scenario brought by the pandemic. Since then, the milk bank has been increasing its total collected volume month after month, thus being able to provide assistance to more babies. In October, the surplus milk was donated to the Cotia Milk Bank, boosting the supply of pasteurized human milk delivered to premature infants hospitalized in their ICU.

In addition, Lactare is studying new projects for the coming year, such as transforming liquid milk into milk powder through a freeze-drying process. In this new presentation form, the product can be stored for longer and delivered to more distant regions.

Breastfeeding mothers can donate their excess milk at the Itapevi unit or in the breastfeeding rooms available at the Brooklyn administrative building and at Eurofarma Institute’s headquarters in Interlagos.

In Itapevi, collections are made at home within a radius of up to 20km from the city center. The Lactare technical team developed prevention protocols and intensified the use of preventive measures and personal protective equipment (PPE).
